Start to centenary year - all boxed up!

The team at Naylor Wintersgill have launched their upcoming year of centenary celebrations by taking part in the Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas Child’ shoe box appeal over the festive period. The firm took on the challenge to wrap and fill an impressive 100 shoe boxes, containing gifts for children worldwide at Christmas time to start the celebrations for the firm’s centenary year in 2017.

Naylor Wintersgill has been part of the Bradford business community for 100 years now and Managing Partner, Victoria Wainwright explains, “The long history of the firm allows us to understand the value of moving with the times. Our combination of strong core values and our willingness to embrace new technologies allows us to offer practical, real-world support and advice to meet our individual clients’ needs, whatever the industry. At Naylor Wintersgill, we pride ourselves in our people and I would like to thank everyone for their honourable fundraising efforts throughout 2016.  We are really looking forward to plenty more fundraising opportunities and activities as part of our centenary celebrations this year!”

 After deciding to set themselves the remarkable challenge, the firm contacted long standing client ASC Cartons Limited in Shipley, who were delighted to donate all 100 of the boxes to be filled to reach the fundraising total. Chairman, Alan Wintersgill added, “As a firm, we encourage and actively support our team in all areas of their development, so when the idea was put forward by a number of staff who wanted get involved, we were happy to assist.”

 The fundraising activity marks the start of a yearlong plan of centenary celebrations for Naylor Wintersgill in 2017.

 With true Yorkshire enthusiasm, Friday 29th July saw Naylor Wintersgill braving the down pours to celebrate Yorkshire Day – albeit two days early!

 Over 100 clients and professional contacts joined our Yorkshire Day celebrations this year with guests enjoying good old Yorkshire hospitality with locally brewed Bradford Brewery ‘Northern Soul’ cask ale and yummy Yorkshire fayre supplied by Foodworks.

 It wouldn’t quite have been a Yorkshire ‘do’ without a spot of welly wanging and the stakes were high to be crowned the champion of the traditional sport on the day.  There was also ample opportunity to ‘tek thee sen a selfie’ in front of our photo screen with lots of flat caps to doth and props to pose with – check out our gallery for some fantastic photos of the day!

As the atmospheric sounds of Yorkshire Brass Quintet filled the afternoon, our guests were also treated to sights of some fantastic Farnell Bradford Jaguar motors on show and local Bradford based bike shop Pennine Cycles brought with them some of their amazing Pennine frame cycles to showcase.

We are pleased to announce that  our Yorkshire Day raffle raised a huge £400 to be split between our chosen charities for the year, Marie Curie Bradford Hospice and Bradford based charity One In A Million.

Every member of the NW team worked together to contribute to the success of the day and volunteers were on hand for every task, from serving drinks, pinning Yorkshire roses, giving out good bags to washing up - a big thank you from all the partners!

It was a 'reet good' do and we hope to see thee all next year!

We are extremely proud to officially announce that Naylor Wintersgill has been presented with a ‘highly commended’ award in the ‘Job Creator of the Year’ category at the annual Telegraph & Argus Bradford Means Business Awards 2016.

The glittering awards ceremony, held on 11th June 2016 at the Aagrah restaurant in Thornbury, Bradford saw hundreds gather to celebrate the district’s top business men, women and firms success and achievements.

This year the ‘Job Creator of the Year’ category was sponsored by Bradford College and we were honoured to be only one of three businesses shortlisted in this prestigious category. The award honours those who have played an outstanding role in boosting employment in the Bradford district by doing their best to increase workforces and also train and improve the skills of existing employees.

On the run up to awards ceremony, we were given the nerve-racking opportunity to film a short video about Naylor Wintersgill to be played just before our category winner was announced on the evening. Managing partner Victoria Wainwright took on the task and it was great to see Naylor Wintersgill in the spotlight at such a fantastic event.

We are extremely proud to have been a part of the Bradford business community for almost a hundred years now, and as firm we are passionate about developing home grown talent. As an officially appointed training firm of the Institute of Chartered Accountants we are delighted that we are celebrating our 25th year of offering an annual modern apprenticeship programme to grow and develop our workforce for the future.  We firmly believe the success of the firm depends on each and every member of our team and fully support and encourage all colleagues in their ongoing technical and professional development.

Just to be nominated is an incredible accolade and we are very proud of our achievements as we constantly look to work with individuals who have the same passion and enthusiasm we do.

Naylor Wintersgill held its annual Golf Day at Shipley Golf Club on Friday 13th May - even the chilly spell of weather coudn't dampen our spirits!

This year the event saw 17 teams playing in a texas scrammble format battling it out for 1st  prize on the day.  There was also a Naylor Wintersgill first - the last man, on the last hole, taking the last shot of the day making a hole in one!

The Naylor Wintersgill team dug out their aprons this March as we held our very own Boardroom Bake off in support the Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal.   We were very privileged to be joined by our very own VIP guest judges, with community fundraiser Sharon Link and principal social worker Andrew Marshall from the Bradford hospice taking their role very seriously!

After the ‘Winner’s Whisk’ was announced, those who were better at eating cake than baking it emptied their pockets for a slice of the action as they got stuck in to the entries with all proceeds going to the Marie Curie Bradford Hospice.

Managing Partner, Victoria Wainwright said, “Staff pulled out all the stops to brave the bake off challenge and it’s safe to say we had some fantastic entries!  I am very pleased to announce that we raised £150 for Marie Curie.”

We’re pleased to announce that from the 1st February 2016, Naylor Wintersgill welcomes tax specialist Chris Gumbley to the firm as tax partner.

The appointment further strengthens Naylor Wintersgill’s position as one of the leading firms of chartered accountants and business advisors in West Yorkshire and is an exciting new step forward in Naylor Wintersgill’s ambitious growth strategy.

Managing Partner, Vicky Wainwright said: “We are delighted that Chris has chosen to join the Naylor Wintersgill team on a full time basis. As a tax specialist, Chris offers a wealth of specialisms and expertise in all areas of taxation including corporate transactions, group tax planning, managing exits from businesses and mergers/acquisitions. Chris has provided tax consultancy to the firm for a number of years and we are extremely pleased he likes us so much he wants to work with us on a daily basis! Having just gone through our biennial assessment for our Customer First accreditation, we’ve been reading through the report from our assessment with some pride over the festive period.  However, upon returning to the office on Monday, we came across this article on Insidermedia.com.  For those that clicked on the article, we apologise for killing your happy mood!

Can it be true that over half of workers in Yorkshire are looking to change jobs in 2016??

Digging a little deeper, the story comes from a survey done by the preeminent Investors In People in November 2015 and, whilst not the largest national surveys ever conducted, it does demonstrate some noteworthy opinions and statistics:

  1. Almost 1 in 3 people are unhappy in their current role (32% in Yorkshire!)
  2. Almost half of people are considering moving jobs in 2016
  3. Almost 1 in 5 people are now actively seeking a new role
  4. Over 80% of people cited either ‘Poor Management’ or ‘not feeling valued’ as the reason for their unhappiness

To be pretty frank, this shocked us.

Having just had our staff surveyed and interviewed (independently and randomly selected) by the assessor for Customer First, we thought it would be worth sharing with you part of their report which discusses our people:

Employees are encouraged to contribute their ideas and become involved in various networking and event activities without being forced to do so. It is clear that the support provided by NW is valued and a sample of comments noted during the assessment visit included;

  • 'I can’t think of any improvement that they (NW) are not already considering’
  • ‘anyone will help you’
  • ‘great place to work’
  • 'like a family, even invited to Our Chairman’s summer BBQ’
  • ‘I love working here’
  • ‘I get all the support I need’

There were no negative comments, which is not to say everything is perfect but nevertheless a positive indictment of the NW approach to people management.

We believe that our people are critical to the success of Naylor Wintersgill. We depend on each and every member of our team.  We value and respect our colleagues for their honesty, integrity and accountability. We fully support and encourage our colleagues in their on-going technical training and professional development. Their advancement advances us.

These things are baked into our DNA and are a fundamental part of what and who we are. Without this attitude, we believe firmly that our high levels service to our Customers, Clients and Partners could not be achieved. We understand that without our people, we are “just another accountant”. They make us better than that.

What a fantastic afternoon – we certainly put Naylor Wintersgill on the map! Over 160 clients and professional contacts celebrated “Yorkshire Day Eve” with us – the largest gathering in the last 7 years! The feedback has been outstanding – many people commenting on the “Naylor Wintersgill team spirit” and the warm welcome guests received on the day. Every member of the NW team contributed to the resounding success from pinning roses to serving ample wine measures, from fetching and carrying dirty glasses to even bringing in his own marigolds to wash up.  The rain stayed off but the marquee nearly blew away at the Naylor Wintersgill staff summer BBQ  - a typical British summer’s day! It was great to see Naylor Wintersgill colleagues and their families attend the staff event held at our Chairman, Alan Wintersgill’s house in Bingley. At Naylor Wintersgill, we’ve always been very proud of our “family ethos” – perhaps this is part of the reason why, as a firm of accountants, we appeal to so many family businesses. We’re pleased to announce that from the 1st March 2015, Naylor Wintersgill has merged with fellow Bradford-based Auker Rhodes Accounting to create the largest accountancy firm in Bradford City Centre.

The merger will strengthen Naylor Wintersgill’s position as one of the leading independent firms of chartered accountants and business advisers in West Yorkshire. The acquisition is the first step of Naylor Wintersgill’s ambitious growth strategy driven by its new Executive Team.

Managing Partner, Vicky Wainwright said: “We’re delighted to have concluded this merger with such a strong firm of independent accountants who share our philosophy of helping our clients to grow and succeed. The specialisms and expertise of the staff at Auker Rhodes will complement the knowledge and know-how on offer to all our clients.

'Twere a reet good do!Over 100 clients and professional contacts joined in our Yorkshire Day celebrations on the 1st August 2014. Guests enjoyed locally brewed Salamander beer, delicious Yorkshire treats supplied by Foodworks and a rousing chorus of “On Ilkley Moor bah tat” played by the Yorkshire Brass Quintet. There was also a Yorkshire quiz and a Yorkshire pudding relay race around the Naylor Wintersgill car park! Our Yorkshire Day celebrations also provided an ideal opportunity to celebrate Alan Wintersgill’s BEM award and Colin Whitehead’s promotion to Partner from the 1st August. We’ll be celebrating a day earlier next year –31st July 2015 – “It’d be grand to si thee there!”

A team of 8 (Adele, Alison, Becky, Emily, Louise, Melanie, Reji and Vicki) took part in the Ladies Moonlight 10k Walk on the 4th July and raised funds for Bradford & Airedale Cancer Support. Naylor Wintersgill's Grand DepartThe Tour de France came early to Naylor Wintersgill with a “warm up” event in the NW car park raising funds for Marie Curie. Teams of 4 from the West Yorkshire business community donned their lycra and cycled as far as they could on fixed wheel bikes (kindly supplied by NW client, Gent Visick – thanks Rupert!) It was thoroughly exhausting just watching them. However, the cyclists were cheered on by colleagues who also joined in “Le Tour” fever by wearing yellow – our tribute to the Grand Depart and Marie Curie Bradford Hospice. The winning team, NW’s “Panting Partners (Vicky, Alison, Philip and Gavin) were unfortunately disqualified for taking off their yellow wigs during the race and were pipped to the post by Craven Slater who cycled 23.90km in 30 minutes. The event has raised over £1200 so far – congratulations to everyone who took part! Check out the photos on our Gallery page

Heartfelt congratulations to our Chairman, Alan Wintersgill for being awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Honours List for services to charity and the community of Bingley.

When Alan was asked . . .“How do I feel? . . . Stunned, surprised and when it finally sank in, absolutely delighted! Having grown up in Bradford and worked and lived in and around Bingley, it’s a great honour (and humbling experience) to be recognised for work in my local community. Over the years I’ve been very fortunate to become involved in a range of different types of charity work, from local village fetes to engaging the support of the Bradford business community in my role as Ambassador for the Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford. I hope this accolade can continue to help raise the profile of these worthy causes and promote the valuable work of all those involved. And I’ll try to stop grinning soon!”

Don’t get caught out! Under RTI, employers are required to submit details of pay and deductions to HMRC at or before payment is made to the employee. While the new system has been “bedding in”, there have been no penalties where the full payment submission (FPR) is late. However, from the 6th October 2014, a fixed penalty will be charged each time a return is filed late. The size of the penalty will depend on the number of employees in the PAYE scheme:

Back for more after 16 years!The Bradford Society of Chartered Accountants elected Alan Wintersgill as President for 2014-15 at its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 14th May . . . for the second time around!
Alan Wintersgill is a familiar face within the Bradford business community. He is the Chairman of Naylor Wintersgill chartered accountants and has a busy portfolio of owner managed businesses as well as developing the strategic role of the practice.
His involvement with the ICAEW goes back nearly 40 years. He first took up the role as President of the Bradford Society in 1997 followed by the West Yorkshire Society President in 2001. He is also a member of the ICAEW Joint Audit Committee and a Past ICAEW Council Member.
He says: 'I’m very privileged to accept the role of President for the second time – I mustn’t have made a bad job of it 16 years ago! There have been a lot of changes in that time and I’m keen to ensure the work of the District Society reflects the changing needs of accountants working in both practice and industry. The Society offers fantastic opportunities for accountants to network, educate, collaborate and promote our profession to wider audiences. My main priority is to ensure the Bradford District Society will still be here supporting future generations of local accountants!”

Model employeeNaylor Wintersgill partners and clients were very excited to support Naylor Wintersgill colleague, Charlotte Ing at the Leeds Professional Fashion Show at the Royal Armouries on the 8th May.

Charlotte looked stunning in an outfit provided by French Connection as she strutted on the catwalk in front of an audience of 500 guests from the business community including a table of Naylor Wintersgill clients (who also looked fabulous!) The event raised around £4000 for Cancer Research and a great evening was had by all!

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's Reji!Tax Consultant, Reji Garcha has gone above and beyond the call of duty by jumping out of a plane in support of local charity, One in a Million. Reji took tax matters to new heights (15,000ft to be exact!) when she successfully landed her first tandem skydive at Hibaldstow, near Brigg in Lincolnshire.

Reji has raised an incredible £815 through the very generous donations from family, friend and colleagues at Naylor Wintersgill. The fantastic donation will help support disadvantaged children in the Bradford area.

Springtime at Naylor WintersgillThe Naylor Wintersgill team brought a ray of early spring sunshine to the Boardroom this month wearing bright yellow and baking yellow delicacies to be auctioned off in support of the Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal. The Chairman of the Marie Curie Development Board, Alan Wintersgill said “The staff never cease to amaze – not only can they produce first class cash flow projections, they’re not bad at baking either! As “Head Judge” of the Bake-off, I obviously took my cake tasting role very seriously and I’m very pleased to announce that we raised £300 for Marie Curie.”

The new legislation will require considerable planning on the part of the employer.
It is crucial that companies are preparing now even if their staging date doesn’t happen until 2016.

To this end, Naylor Wintersgill will be holding 3 client seminars to explain the facts and highlight the actions employers must take.

The seminars will take place at Bradford City Football Ground from 08.00 – 10.00 on the following dates:

Our latest charity challenge
Our latest charity challengeA big thank you to the Naylor Wintersgill staff, clients and professional contacts who squeezed into their football gear (after the festive excesses!) and took part in the One in a Million charity 5-a-side football tournament. There was a marked improvement on last year’s efforts (when we came last!) as the team made it thought to the quarter finals before heading off for beers and a curry – all in the name of networking! It was an excellent event which raised £3,000 and will contribute to the work that One In A Million does amongst children and young people in deprived areas of Bradford.

Winners at Raising the Bar
Winners at Raising the BarCongratulations to the Naylor Wintersgill team on winning the “Community Category” at the inaugural “Raising the Bar” awards ceremony. The new initiative from Bradford Chamber helps firms with their social responsibility aims. It enables companies to document and benchmark how they help local communities, education, the economy and the environment.
Naylor Wintersgill’s submission included:

• completing the Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge in support of One in a Million
• A group of 10 ladies taking part in the Ladies Moonlit Walk on behalf of Cancer Support raising £2371.
• A staff bake-off where staff brought in their homemade goodies raising money for Comic Relief

to name but a few! Thank you to all our staff and clients who contributed/donated to these causes. We’re putting our “thinking caps” on for 2014 – we’ve got a title to defend!

Naylor Wintersgill has recently submitted an entry into the Raising the Bar awards due to take place on 28th November at the Bradford City Stadium. The scheme is a local initiative designed to help businesses showcase the good work they do in the Bradford community and benchmark progress against set standards of achievement.

The submissions are assessed in four main categories (economy, community, environment and education). The scheme also introduces businesses to community organisations, charities and schools that need assistance with a specific project.
 
Naylor Wintersgill is very proud of its charitable ethos and during 2013 has been delighted to support, in particular, One in a Million, Marie Curie Bradford Hospice, Cancer Support Bradford & Airedale. Winners will be announced on the 28th November - Fingers crossed!

4 heroic hikers from Naylor Wintersgill (Philip Venter, Gavin Lamb, Darren Hindle and Ashleigh Phillips) set off on an adventure in support of Bradford charity, One in a Million and raised over £1200 in the process. The 4 accountants swapped their calculators for their compasses as they climbed the Yorkshire 3 Peaks in dense fog and very damp conditions.

Partner, Philip Venter said “I really admire the work of One in a Million – a local charity that helps children & young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, providing education through sports, the arts and enterprise. A team of eleven ladies from Naylor Wintersgill has signed up to the Cancer Support Bradford & Airedale Ladies 10k Moonlight Walk.

The event which is part of the charity’s Silver Jubilee Year Celebration will take place at the Nuffield Health & Fitness Club in Cottingley on Friday 5th July commencing at 9pm. The charity was established in 1988 hence the event’s 80’s theme. 
The Naylor Wintersgill team are delighted to work with the charity which has been supporting local people affected by cancer for the past 25 years.

We are delighted to announce that from 1st July, Colin Whitehead ACA has become an Associate Partner at Naylor Wintersgill.

After graduating from Leeds Met University in 2002, Colin joined Naylor Wintersgill to pursue a career in accountancy. A year later, he qualified as a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians and successfully went on to complete the rigorous Institute of Chartered Accountants training qualifying in 2006.
During his eleven years at Naylor Wintersgill, Colin has developed excellent client working relationships as well as building his network of professional contacts through organisations such as the Business Connections Bradford networking group. He has also been a co-presenter on the Goldman Sachs 10k small businesses programme hosted by Leeds University Business School.
Colin is an active member of the local business and professional community including the Bradford Society of Chartered Accountants committee and more recently, the West Yorkshire Society of Chartered Accountants, a Past President of the Bradford Student Society, a Trustee of Leeds charity, The Works Skate Park and Treasurer of his local hockey club

Congratulations Vicky Fryer for winning the Bradford Inspirational Business Woman Award at the 2nd Annual Inspirational Women Awards ceremony held at the Hilton Hotel on the 16th March 2013.

An audience of over 400 guests from diverse backgrounds attended the ceremony celebrating the achievements of local women in a range of categories including Community Star, Best Employee and Established Business. It's a fantastic success - well done Vicky!

Naylor Wintersgill staff ditched their spreadsheets and donned their aprons for a Comic Relief Bake Off in support of Red Nose Day 2013. The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress arrived for the official tasting and adjudication before the Naylor Wintersgill staff were invited to pledge money for a slice of heaven!

Councillor Dale Smith readily admitted that he “knows nothing about baking but everything about eating” and enjoyed tucking into a Baileys Cheesecake which was the winning entry by Melanie Hoban, Tax Advisor.

Managing Partner, Vicky Fryer, says “it’s about time we accountants shake off our stereotypical image – even if it’s just for a day. I’m very proud that our staff have entered into the fun and was delighted that the Lord Mayor was able to join us for a highly calorific afternoon! The Bake Off raised over £138 which Naylor Wintersgill will double in aid of Comic Relief.”

One in a Million has devised a varied programme of fundraising events for businesses and individuals and we’re literally “kicking off” by entering a Naylor Wintersgill team of staff and clients into the Celebrity/Am Corporate 5-a-side football competition on the 31st January. Managing Partner, Vicky Fryer recently appeared as a Guest Speaker on the local radio station – Bradford Community Broadcasting (BCB) which is hosted by the Bradford Chamber of Commerce.

Naylor Wintersgill welcomes the appointment of three new accountancy trainees.

After graduating in Accountancy & Finance at The University of Bradford and then pursuing a Masters qualification in Finance, Shreekanya Gangopadhyay (22) has commenced her professional ACA training with Naylor Wintersgill.
 
Ashleigh Phillips (25) and Joe Murphy (18) have also joined as Account Trainees and will be studying for their Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualifications. Ashleigh has worked as an Office Manager in Guiseley for six years before deciding on a career change, while Joe has recently completed his A levels at Parkside School, Cullingworth.

Managing Partner, Vicky Fryer, was recently invited as the Guest Speaker to attend the inaugural meeting of a women's business networking group (Women@Work) in Skipton and the Aire Valley. The group has been set up by April Chamberlain (Managing Partner of law firm AWB Charlesworth Solicitors) and Elizabeth Smith (Business Manager at Natwest Bank) to help female entrepreneurs through informal and social gatherings.

As well as outlining her rise from accountancy trainee to an award winning practitioner and Managing Partner at Naylor Wintersgill, Vicky also discussed the benefits of networking and revealed some of her top tips for creating your own networking strategy.

Future women@work events will be held on a quarterly basis, with the next planned for 6th December.

This year's event took place on Friday 5th October at The Midland Hotel and was well attended with 200 accountants and their guests.

The Naylor Wintersgill contingent had special cause to celebrate as one of their newly qualified members of staff, Charlotte Ing, picked up the top student prize in the Bradford area for achieving the best results in the final ACA exams which took place earlier this year. Congratulations Charlotte!

A big thank you to all our clients and contacts who supported our recent Diamond Jubilee Street Party . . . in the pouring rain! The event organised in conjunction with Baildon-based Keycare attracted over 200 guests from the Bradford business and professional community.

The street party had been set up to showcase the Grand Draw of a charity raffle raising funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and we raised a staggering £2861.12! The main prize donated by Appleyard Jaguar was a Jaguar Track Experience for two lucky winners. The Chief Pilot from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Captain Andy Lister was invited to draw the raffle and present the prizes.
Vicky Fryer, Naylor Wintersgill Managing Partner comments: “We are delighted with this collaborative fundraising effort which has raised a fantastic amount for such a worthy cause. As a firm, we also saw it as a good excuse to invite our clients and contacts to a ‘right royal knees up’ in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The event has attracted considerable attention in the business community – it’s not often you get to see accountants holding a party in their office car park!”

"STUCK in a rut? Unsure of which career path to tread?Well, it might be wise to heed the sage words of Vicky Fryer’s 91-year-old grandmother Margaret.Back in 1991, 16-year-old Vicky had just left school and was working as an office junior at a curtain manufacturer in Shipley, near Bradford.Young Vicky had plenty of drive – she’d started her own dog walking business at the age of 10 – but needed a sense of purpose.Who better to provide it than her gran? Margaret spotted an advertisement for a trainee accountant at Naylor Wintersgill, which can trace its Bradford roots back to 1917. Why didn’t Vicky apply for it?

Sure enough, Vicky got the job, and, to almost quote the late Victor Kiam, she liked the company so much that she became managing partner.

Female bosses of accountancy firms are a rare breed, to say the least. Over the past two decades, Ms Fryer, who is now 37, has campaigned hard for her home city, which has twice been the scene of riots.While other accountancy firms have moved out, she’s been part of a management team at Naylor Wintersgill that has backed Bradford to the hilt.

“Bradford has a close knit business community and there’s a fantastic workforce of young people who are hungry for jobs,’’ said Ms Fryer. “There’s a very strong skill set within Bradford and a lot of talented young people. This could be brought to the fore with further investment in companies from outside the region. On Thursday 31st May 12-2pm, we’ll be hanging out the bunting in the Naylor Wintersgill car park to celebrate not only the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee but also to hold the Grand Draw of a charity raffle in support of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Our “street party” for clients and contacts will feature “buns and bunting”, the Salamander brewery, lots of Union Jacks and a great opportunity to network with Bradford’s business community. Top Tip: Reduction in Annual Investment Allowance

 
Just a reminder that from 31 March 2012 (for companies) or 5 April 2012 (for sole traders and partnerships), the Annual Investment Allowance (AIA) will reduce from £100,000 to £25,000.
 
AIA is the annual total amount of Capital Expenditure that can be written off against tax at the time of it being incurred, rather than over a period of years. AIA applies to equipment including vans. Purchase of cars or premises do not attract AIA.Amounts spent in excess of the AIA are carried forward and relieved at a lower amount, 18% per annum from next year- so you get tax relief but over a number of years.
 
The key message is that if you are planning investment in equipment and/or vans in excess of £25,000, then it should be planned before 31 March 2012.

From 1st of January 2012 Alan Wintersgill has taken on the new role of Practice Chairman and Vicky Fryer has been appointed Managing Partner.

Vicky’s promotion to Managing Partner will allow her to take over the day to day running of the firm whilst at the same time managing her existing client portfolio.

Vicky said “I am delighted to take on this challenging role and will strive to maintain and enhance our service to clients, ensuring we meet the evolving needs of our growing client base.”

Alan said “These are exciting times for the firm. The new role of Practice Chairman will give me a greater opportunity to explore new ideas and ensure the firm is well equipped to offer innovative solutions to our clients. In particular I will be concentrating on further developing our corporate finance expertise.”

Alan went on to say “The partners have always had our clients as the focal point for our business success.  In fact, we were the first accountancy firm in the UK to be accredited with “Putting the Customer First” - an accolade of which we are extremely proud. With Vicky managing the day to day business, the continued support of the partners and in my new strategic role – our clients can be assured that our high standards of delivery and client service will continue to be our focus, especially in these trying times.”

On the 22nd November, Naylor Wintersgill, HSBC and Gordons Solicitors hosted a Curry Masterclass at the Aagrah Midpoint for local clients. Not only were guests treated to the culinary secrets of a top Indian chef but they were also invited to sample the delicious curry dishes. The networking event was a real hit with clients and will no doubt be repeated in 2012. Pass the mints please!

During November 2011, one of our Partners, Vicky Fryer was invited to present to 30 small businesses who are taking part in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses UK Programme. Vicky held a number of workshops focusing on understanding key financial ratios and metrics most relevant for SME’s. The programme delivery has been co-ordinated by the Leeds University Business School who are currently recruiting business owners to participate in the 2012 programme.
